“Thursday was the first time the Vienna Philharmonic performed in Segerstrom Concert Hall, with its vaunted acoustics. It sounded wonderful. The orchestra has a unique and delicious sound, also a complex one. The complexity comes from the multiplicity and transparency of the overall sound. Each and every musician is heard not so much as part of a blend, but as individuals, because each has a little brightness and zing in tone that cut through. The result is never harsh, though, but airy and piquant, like a snow covered pine forest under clear blue skies.”
