Lars's Projects Experience

Lars Klein is a Senior Consultant and Project Manager in the Theatre Planning department at Artec. As Project Manager, his primary responsibilities include space programming, facility layout, building systems’ accommodation for theatrical systems as well as interpreting user’s needs into building requirements. His specialty is the design of Performance Equipment Systems, which includes the layout and specification of permanent overhead rigging systems, under stage machinery, adjustable acoustics and variable seating systems. He has been with Artec since 2002.

Lars’ understanding of theatre spaces has come from his diverse career as a technical theatre professional. The breadth of his experience has encompassed multiple roles including technical director, production supervisor, lighting designer, sound designer, master carpenter, master electrician, rigger, and stage manager. In these roles, he has worked with a variety of organizations, community groups, regional and LORT theatres; for example – Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle, Washington; the Yale Repertory Theatre, New Haven, Connecticut, thw Cumberland County Playhouse, Crossville, Tennessee; and Smothers Theatre, Malibu, California.

Prior to joining Artec, Lars was a project manager and rigging systems designer for Pook, Diemont & Ohl, Inc., a theatrical equipment contractor and installer. In this position, he designed and installed rigging systems for a range of venues; small black box spaces at colleges to Broadway style house such as the Kodak Theatre, Hollywood, California, along with television studios for NY1, CNN, and NBC.

His success in advising and designing new performance spaces is grounded in over twenty-five years of learning and experience that began as stagehand while in secondary school. Lars holds Master of Fine Arts degree in Technical Design and Production from the Yale School of Drama; he wrote his Master's thesis as a manual that explores the design, construction and maintenance of water and rain effects, waterfalls, and pools for the stage.
