Harvey Theatre, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen, Michigan, USA

Harvey Theatre is a component of the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Interlochen is actually a nonprofit umbrella organization for Interlochen Arts Academy, Interlochen Arts Camp, and Interlochen Public Radio. The Center is spread out on a 1,200-acre campus, surrounded by glacial lakes and pines and including 450 buildings.

The Harvey Theatre was opened in 1998 to replace an older venue, which had been condemned. Less than 18 months were allocated for design and construction of the new theater. The following year, Frohlich Piano and Percussion Building was opened to provide teaching space, practice rooms, a piano technician's studio, and a historic instrument room.

The 250-seat, state-of-the-art, flexible theater provides rehearsal and performance space for Interlochen Camp and Academy performances. The Harvey Theatre has also become the home of the Theatre Department. The flexible venue is equipped with several rows of fixed sitting along the walls of the room; loose seats can also be positioned on the flat floor of the theater. Tension-wire grids above the entire room accommodates a variety of rigging and lighting settings, which allow the thrust-stage theater to be configured into proscenium mode setting.

Artec provided Design and Planning services covering Pre-Design Phase services, Auditorium Design, Facility Planning, Specialized Performance Equipment Systems Design and Background Noise and Vibration Control consulting for the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Boston-based Sasaki Associates were the architects on these projects.
