Jack Singer Concert Hall, part of EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts in Calgary, opened its doors in 1985. The Centre incorporates three state-of-the-art performing spaces: Jack Singer Concert Hall, Max Bell Theatre, Martha Cohen Theatre, as well as full production workshops, office areas, an indoor shopping mall, and rehearsal spaces.
The 2021-seat concert hall is the home of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as one of Canada's largest pipe organs, the Carthy Organ. Since opening, Jack Singer Concert Hall's acoustics have been praised by the musicians and conductors who have performed there. The Artec-designed adjustable acoustics system includes a canopy, clad in laminated spruce wood. Suspended high above the stage and weighing 185,000-pounds (90-tons), this massive acoustical reflector can be raised or lowered to adjust the acoustical environment to meet the needs of the broad spectrum of music performed in the hall.
Some of the other activities that take place at EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts include traditional and experimental theater and dance productions, children's events, art exhibits, public forums, weddings, meetings, arts education activities and a range of music performances that include jazz, folk, blues, world, rock and Epcor Centre's popular BD&P World Music Series.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering Pre-Design Phase services, Auditorium Acoustics Design and Background Noise and Vibration Control consulting for the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts. The architect was local firm Raines, Finlayson, Barrett.
