Bowring Park Amphitheatre's opening ceremony took place with a full house of invited guests in the summer of 2000. The Amphitheatre's unique design is a direct reflection of the high priority placed on the surrounding landscape by all parties involved in its construction. It therefore makes it not only a beautiful feature of Bowring Park, but also a new landmark for the City of St. Johns.
The Amphitheatre is a multi-purpose, fully accessible facility with superb acoustics. Its design and construction also featured a conscious choice of materials that would be relatively maintenance-free for years to come. The Amphitheatre includes a covered stage that is equipped with an acoustically enhanced ceiling, two dressing rooms, a green room, storage area, and electrical/mechanical room. The amphitheatre has a seating capacity for up to 700, two large public washrooms, and a common meeting area.
Operating from late spring through early autumn, the Amphitheatre accommodates a variety of performing arts disciplines, including song, dance, theater, spoken word, magic shows, and cultural events. Bowring Park Foundation, established in 1995 to undertake the restoration and future development of Bowring Park, welcomes local arts community members and local students to utilize the amphitheatre for a variety of performances.
Artec provided Design and Planning services covering performance venue design for this open-air venue. The project architect was PHB Group/Architects.
